One job title was never going to hold me....and it doesn't have to hold you either, unless you want it to.
About
I'll go first. I'm a scientist who writes children's books, a poet who can profile RNA from and name every bone in your hand, an educator who has spent more time with fish than most people spend with their family, and a consultant who thinks a coral reef and a sixteen-year-old have a lot more in common than you'd guess.
The sensible advice is to pick a lane. I built a roundabout instead, and it turns out that's where all the interesting traffic meets. I stand in the cross-roads of many diverse specialities, and that makes me interesting and my perspective novelly supported.
My foundations are properly academic, with undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and university-affiliated research, teaching and workshops in human anatomy, medical genetics, marine biology and ecology, studied and researched until the patterns started talking to each other. Add years of living across England, Ireland, Africa, Asia and beyond, and you get a way of seeing that ignores most of the borders and limitations we've all been handed. Genes, oceans, bodies and family stories all repeat themselves and then surprise you in the same places. I work in that crossover, and nobody else is standing in quite the same spot.
Here's what I do with it
I write books for every age, fiction and non-fiction, and I perform poetry that rings louder than people expect. It's narrative fiction for narrative therapy. You already know what everyone else should do. My characters go ahead and do the clumsy, brave, slightly ridiculous version first, so you can laugh, wince and then quietly take your own advice.
I also work with young people aged 11 to 25 through my Tutoring, Mentoring and Student Support Educational Consultancy, built on real science about how our lives, our bodies, our emotional capacity and our brains grow.
And I bring visionary ideas to life through Scientific & Planetary Health & Well-being Consultancy, for people who are done talking about sustainable change and ready to build it. The goal is a world better than it has ever been, and I mean that literally.
